The <\/span>Port of Riga<\/a> has 75 ha of its area occupied by protected nature reserves, that are listed as part of the Natura 2000<\/a> network. These spaces include the Milestibas Island (Love Island), part of a Latvian national park (SeaSide Nature Park\/Piejura Nature Park), and the Kremeri nature reserve, which was established in 1993 and awarded national importance status in 1999. Therefore, in collaboration with the Nature Conservation Agency and ornithologists, the port authority monitors the areas<\/a> for their maintenance. It pays special attention to the annual tracking of nesting waterfowl. The nesting habitat was established on the non-protected territory of Zurku Isle, which is also maintained by the port. The Kremeri Reserve is also a significant nesting ground for certain species of water birds that are protected in Latvia and Europe. The birds have been the subject of scientific study for several years, and, in collaboration with the LU Institute of Biology, the Port of Riga has worked to improve its biotopes and nesting conditions. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023, a <\/span>study <\/a>by the Institute of Biology of the University of Latvia proved that the measures are effective. The population of waterfowl species has increased in both number and size. The average success for ducks, for instance, has grown 73% in four years. Moreover, new species started nesting in the area. Other than birds, the port also monitors bats that use the Mangalsala Forts<\/a> as a hibernation spot during winter. The historical fortification provides shelter for 1\/3 of the bats of the Daugava estuary. <\/span><\/p>\n
