The Port of Dublin is located close to certain zones of high environmental importance, not just for Ireland but for Europe as well. Dublin Bay and the neighbouring estuary areas have been designated as Special Protection Areas under the EU’s Birds Directive, and the bay is one of Ireland’s top ten wetland areas for migrating waterfowl. Over 30,000 waterfowl spend the winter in the bay every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, the Port of Dublin joined forces with <\/span>BirdWatch Ireland<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Dublin Bay Biosphere<\/span><\/a><\/span> to launch a programme aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the way birds use the different habitats in the bay and how they move between the bay and neighbouring wetlands. A ringing campaign will be carried out on a large selection of the birds present. However, efforts will focus on three species of wading birds which are very numerous internationally: the common pied oystercatcher, the bar-tailed godwit, and the common redshank. In addition, existing monitoring of the large colony of breeding terns in the port zones will be continued. In 2014, the City of Dublin and BirdWatch Ireland launched a programme to monitor the species present in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

This biodiversity protection project is part of the <\/span>Alexandra Basin Redevelopment (ABR) Project<\/span><\/a><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> which is a major part of Dublin Port Company’s 2040 Masterplan. The bird monitoring project was first proposed in the first masterplan draft published in 2012 and expanded further in the 2018 review of the master plan. It entails the construction of 3km quay walls, deepening of the harbour for the accommodation of more and bigger vessels, but also preserving the Victorian era industrial structures located at Dublin’s port.<\/span><\/p>\n

A new partnership between the Port and BirdWatch Ireland was confirmed in January 2018 and ran until 2022. It provided a better understanding of bird movement patterns, not just in winter but throughout the seasons. The data was also used to find solutions to problems caused by various phenomena, such as changing habitats or extreme weather. While the official partnership with the Dublin Port Authority has come to an end, BirdWatch Ireland still monitors birds’ habitats and their movement.<\/span><\/p>\n
