Fremantle is located at the mouth of the Swan River, around twenty kilometres from Perth. It is home to the state of Western Australia’s largest working industrial port. Twenty hectares of the West End, a district that embodies the economic boom created by the local port, have been listed on the State Heritage Register of Western Australia. The City of Fremantle originally proposed the move to the State Heritage Council in 2014, as a way of protecting the area from real estate pressures while preserving its historical and cultural fabric. After an initial assessment by the Council, the numerous landowners and tenants (over 400) were consulted, along with the various stakeholders concerned. However, since the City was already committed to a strong local preservation policy, heritage status would bring little in the way of new constraints. In 2015, the city council recognised the importance of heritage buildings linked to port activities. As a result, they developed a dedicated fact sheet outlining the criteria for including these significant structures in a protection list. This initiative aimed to preserve and safeguard these historically valuable buildings for future generations. Key elements identified as having heritage, historical, or scenic value include heritage buildings linked to port activities, indigenous connections dating back thousands of years, and the authentic preservation of the Inner Harbour established in 1897. <\/span>Temporary entry in the register<\/span><\/a><\/span> was approved in November 2016, providing also information on the <\/span>checklist to nominate a heritage structure<\/span><\/a><\/span>, triggering the creation of the <\/span>Heritage Act in 2018<\/span><\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fremantle Ports<\/span><\/a><\/span> boast a rich economic and industrial history dating back to the early days of the Swan River colony in 1829. Its <\/span>social heritage<\/span><\/a><\/span> is equally important, with deep indigenous connections spanning thousands of years, making it an integral part of Fremantle’s social and cultural fabric. Despite modernisation and expansion over the years, the port’s Inner Harbour, established in 1897, has remained largely unchanged, preserving its authentic heritage. Many original features and connections have been carefully integrated into the working port, allowing it to continue serving intrastate, interstate, and international trade. Fremantle Ports is dedicated to responsibly maintaining its heritage buildings, structures, and items. While various buildings hold heritage significance within the port, some are particularly notable and recognised by external parties like the State Heritage Office. Due to this reason, they have created the <\/span>interactive map of Fremantle ports<\/span><\/a><\/span>, of inner and outer ports, that provides information for the heritage structures related to port activity. The port seeks to uphold its identity and distinguish itself in the context of evolving city\/port interfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n
