An industrial ecology project involving 15 businesses in the port zone was launched in September 2013. The CLES approach<\/a> (Local and Environmental Cooperation in Synergies) was supported by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency ADEME, the Greater Eastern Region, the Eurometropole of Strasbourg, Port Autonome de Strasbourg, and the Ports of Strasbourg Users’ Group (GUPS). The goal is to implement an approach based on industrial and territorial ecology in the port area. This approach, which focuses on the circular economy, aims to support local businesses, enhance their competitiveness, and minimise the environmental impact of their activities on the surrounding area. During the initial phases, the materials and energy flows of companies taking part in the project were assessed, and potential synergies were identified before the first cooperative measures were implemented. In 2017, the fourth phase of the project began, establishing eight synergies around twenty businesses: <\/p>\n

– Pooled energy purchases; <\/p>\n

– Management\/recycling of paper waste; <\/p>\n

– Recycling of organic waste; <\/p>\n

– Combustion of wood waste;<\/p>\n

– Pallet repairs; <\/p>\n

– Pooled purchases of consumables and services; <\/p>\n

– Pooling of washing equipment and vehicle maintenance; <\/p>\n

– Recycling of Cargill malthouse by-products by the start-up Algae Natural Food.<\/p>\n

In 2023, after ten years of the project, 32 companies were involved in 18 synergies. The initiative proved to be valuable in terms of the environment and the economy. Since its launch in 2015, it has helped avoid 5,217 T\/eq CO2 emissions and estimated savings of €1.25 million with direct gains (since 2015). Additionally, in 2020, the initiative helped avoid using trucks for 67,000 km, and in 2021, 2,300 T of waste were recovered locally. The CLES approach seeks to integrate port and urban activities while enhancing the appeal of the port area and improving companies’ competitiveness. The port area functions as an ecosystem for them, with each component contributing to overall efficiency.<\/p>\n
