In recent years, several of Strasbourg’s old port buildings have been redeveloped. In 2003, the Urban Community of Strasbourg ran a competition to convert some former grain silos into a multimedia library. The silos of the Médiathèque André Malraux library, which were designed by architects Ibos et Vitart,<\/a> opened in 2008 and currently house some 160,000 documents across 18,000 m². The project took two years and cost €64.5 million, most of which was financed by the Urban Community of Strasbourg. In the new design, the silo was preserved and painted with metallic grey paint and now serves as the main reception of the library while marking the entrance to the site from the old town. Some old brick walls were dismantled to give way to glass panels, allowing natural light into the space and maintaining the visual connection with the river. Additionally, the architects designed to maintain the site’s industrial character, leaving some technical equipment visible.<\/p>\n

In 2011, a second project was undertaken to convert and extend a building at the Austerlitz port. The project concerned the former Seegmuller armaments warehouse, dating from 1932, the first construction to be rebuilt by the Autonomous Port of Strasbourg after a fire in 1928. The building was abandoned in 2000, and in 2010, the Architecture and Urbanism Office Heintz-Kehr & partners<\/a> gained the contest to redevelop it. The project had a mixed program, including 67 homes, office spaces, restaurants and educational areas. The goal was to preserve the industrial heritage while adding modern elements to the area. For that, the architects designed the most spectacular aspect of the project. Three new levels over the warehouse building corbelled on the north and south facades, and with a 15-metre cantilever on the western side. Windows and steel structure refer to the port’s identity. Moreover, the old part was refurbished, respecting the original materials. “Les Dock’s” was inaugurated in September 2014 with an investment budget of €17 million, excluding VAT.<\/p>\n

The master plan of the Austerlitz site also included the conversion of Seegmuller Tower<\/a>. The old 13-floor grain silo dates back to 1934 and is situated between the Seegmuller warehouse and the André Malraux Media Library. The goal was the creation of 169 student accommodations and related equipment. Weber+Keiling Architects were responsible for the project, which required the demolition of the silo located in the centre of the building. Inaugurated in September 2015, the “International University House” maintained the original building facades, helping to create unity along the area and evoke the heritage character of the old docks.<\/p>\n
