The program aimed to manage the infrastructures to help the coast’s ecological rehabilitation, developing tools and techniques to enhance port areas, and had a pre-tax budget of 4.5 million euros, running for five years, from 2011 to 2015. It involves research organisations such as CEFREM/University of Perpignan, IFREMER, and ECOMERS/University of Nice, as well as industrial partners like Suez Environnement, EGIS Eau, and SAFEGE.

Phase 1, launched in 2012, was financed mainly by public funding, with 80% of the cost covered by the Agence de l’Eau Rhône Méditerranée Corse, 10% by GPMM, and 10% by private partners. The study extended to all areas of the port of Marseilles and had a dual objective: analysing how these areas and port installations could potentially contribute to improving marine environments and examining the feasibility of a direct environmental intervention to promote these improvements. The project had some pilot ideas. “Biorestore” utilised the “Post-larva Culture & Capture” method, where larvae were raised in tanks until large enough to survive predators and reintroduced into the environment in safe habitats. For this project, 120 artificial nurseries were designed, produced, and installed along the quays of the port of Marseille. Another pilot was the “Cystore”, wherein algae were planted outside the dikes of the port. The plants were placed on concrete transplant blocks, protected by mesh, and closely observed by scientists.

The second phase, which launched in 2013, was an upscaled version of the prototypes of Phase 1. The last phase, in 2014 and 2015, was the manufacturing and installation of the pilots on a larger scale than the experiments. The results were positive, with increased biodiversity at the artificial nurseries and higher survival rates than those observed in the wild for the “Biorestore” project. Moreover, the “Cystore” introduced 300 algae to the exterior surfaces of the port’s embankments. During GIREL, the coastal ecological engineering sector emerged with the GECMEDD (Emergence de la filière du Génie Ecologique Côtier en Méditerranée – Emergence of the Coastal Ecological Engineering sector in the Mediterranean, 2013-2015). This initiative helped identify the sector’s strategic issues and recognise the stakeholders’ needs.

Additional information

https://polemermediterranee.com/domaines-dactions-strategiques/girel/ (French)

https://www.ecocean.fr/projets-ecocean/projet-girel-3r/ (French)

https://www.ecocean.fr/2019/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2017.06_FR_GIREL_RE.pdf (French)

https://www.sauvonsleau.fr/jcms/c_7127/port-de-marseille-une-algue-contre-la-degradation-environnementale (French)

The Port of Marseille Fos, also known as the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille (GPMM), has collaborated with the maritime department of the Provence-Alps-Côte d’Azur Region, called “Pôle Mer Méditerranée” (previously “Pôle mer Paca”), to create the GIREL program.
