La Cité du Vin<\/span><\/a><\/span> is characterised by its striking curves and form and its surrounding environment, evoking a sense of continuous movement. Architects <\/span>Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières of XTU<\/span><\/a><\/span>, in collaboration with the UK firm Casson Mann Limited for the scenography, drew inspiration from symbols of identity, such as gnarled vine stocks, swirling wine in a glass, and the eddies of the Garonne River. Every aspect of the building’s architecture embodies the soul and fluidity of wine, described as “seamless roundness, intangible, and sensual” by XTU Architects. This sense of roundness, reflected in the building’s exterior, permeates its indoor spaces, materials, and scale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its facade comprises silk-screen printed glass panels and perforated, iridescent, lacquered aluminium panels. These materials interact with sunlight and the time of day; the colours reflect on the river, changing the colour of the water and the structure. This distinctive structure offers a fresh perspective on the flowing river, with two entrances on opposite sides and a flow between interior and exterior spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n

XTU envisions the main tour as following these natural flows: wine, the river, and the movement of visitors. Visitors navigate the building like a river, with the central staircase guiding them, perpetuating the impression of motion. The initial intention was for the building’s design to align with the scenography, transforming the architecture into an immersive experience. The lower level resembles a dark cellar, evoking the roots of vines. The ground floor serves as a gateway to the project. The mirrored reflections add an element of disorientation, encouraging visitors to ascend toward the tower. <\/span><\/p>\n

The building, which is in the centre of the regeneration area known as the “Bassins à flot”, boasts a green design and bioclimatic solutions, reflecting the environmental policy underpinning the development of this ecodistrict. The same approach has been applied to the landscaping of the adjacent spaces, as the site is on the banks of the Garonne in a “Natura 2000” specially designated ecological area.<\/span><\/p>\n
