The Port Authority of Helsinki observed a surge in port activities, especially in the Helsinki-Tallinn ferry links, leading to congestion in the West Harbour terminals. Plans to accommodate 17,000 residents in Jätkäsaari were reevaluated as traffic and vessel sizes surpassed expectations. This prompted collaborative efforts between the City and Port to balance residents’ quality of life with the competitiveness of port activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to increased awareness of traffic density in the port of Helsinki, port authorities developed a project to combat it in 2019. The port of Helsinki is actively pursuing digitalisation and modernisation through its <\/span>SmartPort initiatives<\/span><\/a><\/span>, which started in 2019. SmartPort encompasses a range of digital projects to improve port efficiency and sustainability, leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence, Big Data, IoT solutions, and blockchains.<\/span><\/p>\n

One significant aspect of <\/span>SmartPort<\/span><\/a><\/span> involved implementing automated ticket gates for passengers at all terminals, creating a more efficient and standardised ticketing system. Some projects focused on vehicle identification and gate functions that streamlined vehicle traffic flow through the port. Cameras and automation further enhance vehicle identification and permit checks, as well as vehicle measurements and weighing.<\/span><\/p>\n

To address the challenge of increased vehicle traffic, especially around the new terminal, SmartPort introduced smart traffic management solutions in collaboration with the City of Helsinki. These solutions employed artificial intelligence and real-time data to optimise traffic flow, including adjusting traffic light phases based on current conditions. Additionally, the Port of Helsinki actively participated in domestic and international projects that aimed to optimise freight logistics. These projects emphasised sharing digital information and real-time data to enhance predictability and reduce manual labour.<\/span><\/p>\n

The SmartPort project implemented a range of measures to address traffic congestion and improve port efficiency. These included the construction of new roads, the introduction of price incentives to encourage off-peak truck traffic, the implementation of smart traffic light management, and the improvement of public transport links. The project also aimed to reduce the port’s environmental impact through the introduction of cold ironing facilities. Furthermore, the project was part of the European initiative Twin-Port, which involved the City and Port of Helsinki, the Port of Tallinn, and shipping lines (Tallink, Viking Line, and Eckerö Line), with the goal of enhancing the West Harbour’s infrastructure and efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n
