Until a few years ago, the Port of Oakland had 12 modestly sized container terminals designed initially to handle 1980s\/90s traffic volumes. To improve the space at the beginning of the 2000s, the port decided to group them into four better-equipped container terminals with a larger capacity, three of which would handle international traffic. In 2017, Oakland took the opportunity to increase its productivity by reassigning rail or military sites to port functions. A 480-acre military base, commissioned in 1942 and closed in 1999, was reallocated, with the Port and the City each getting half of the site. To enable redevelopment, the <\/span>City completed a public infrastructure project in 2019<\/a>, installing new roads and utilities, including bike paths and Bay Trail connections. The port is the location of the new Seaport Logistics Complex.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project’s first part <\/span>started in 2018<\/a> with the plan for distribution centres and a railyard close to marine terminals. Some of the construction that began that year included the Centerpoint<\/a> building, a 4-acre building in the area, which became the largest distribution facility at a West Coast Port. And in November 2018, the port opened the Cool Port<\/a>, a 25-acre space that became a hub for temperature-controlled cargo in Northern California. In 2019, the port and the city traced a plan to improve public engagement<\/a> on the project. Since then, two public meetings<\/a> were scheduled, one in 2019 and one in 2021, to discuss projects and future steps with different stakeholders. Altogether, 45 acres of working space will be opened in a series of phases. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another project carried out by the port was on the Roundhouse<\/a>, a disused rail site close to the Oakland International Container Terminal (OICT), which will house a storage park for empty containers in partnership with SSA Marine. OICT handles approximately 100 vessels per month. Using the Roundhouse site should cut the empty container handling time from one hour to around 25 minutes or less. However, the project plan for 2015 still needed to be executed. <\/span><\/p>\n
