In 1998, the port of Malaga initiated a <\/span>special plan<\/a> to remodel some of its quays and improve its connection with the city. It proposed the creation of an urban port at the boundary between the city centre and the industrial port with a focus on providing recreational, cultural, and entertainment activities. Culture has become the focal point of the strategy designed to restore the links between the city’s historic centre and the old port installations. The cultural facilities at Quay n°1, the “Palmeral de las Sorpresas” at Quay n° 2, and the future Auditorium at the San Andrés platform go hand in hand with efforts to renovate heritage sites and build new infrastructures in the city (Picasso Museum, City Museum, Modern Arts Centre, etc.). <\/span><\/p>\n

The Quay n°2 promenade, “Las Palmeral de las Sorpresas<\/a>”, was designed by Spanish architect Jerónimo Junquera. It is notable not just for the creation of high-quality public space but also for its re-creation of a route linking the city centre with the sea through the port. More generally, the entire project entails rethinking the links between the city centre and the port. In 2008, a park between the city and Quay n°2 was renovated. New access paths were created between the park and the Quay, and the links between quays 1 and 2 were also redesigned. Permeability, continuity and accessibility were identified as the key priorities when restoring the connections between the city centre and the port. The renovation won the Premios Andalucía de Urbanismo<\/a> in 2016 and received more than 12 million visitors in 2019, proving its efficacy.<\/span><\/p>\n
