The Port of Bilbao, since 2014, runs the “Know your port<\/a>“ programme, which involves port tours for children aged 10 to 15 living in the Basque region. Educational materials are provided to teachers, enabling them to prepare for the tour and continue working in the classroom on what the pupils see during it. The main themes approached are history and geography, types of vessels, maritime transport, and energy and environment. The tour lasts three hours, and the port arranges free bus travel there and back. The aim is for 4,000 schoolchildren to visit the port every year, learning about its history and what it does today. The programme also includes guided tours for adults at weekends. <\/span><\/p>\n

Another cultural activity developed at Bilbao’s port is the “port open day” (or Kai-Jai in Basque), organised annually since 2015. At the 2016 edition, the event aligned with the “Know your Port” programme by launching the “Port Stories” contest for children. The 2023 edition also includes the “Know Your Port” idea, but focuses on adults. The port gave a two-hour free tour around the port with the same themes as the children’s programme. Moreover, the 2023 edition of Port Open Day allowed visitors to look at port vessels like the Maritime Rescue boat and the Ertzaintza (from the Basque police force), watch rescue drills and participate in workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, since 1996, Bilbao has been home to the Itsasmuseum<\/a>, a maritime museum designed to promote research and spread knowledge about the maritime history of the city’s river and port. A new milestone was marked in 2018 with the creation of a €400,000 Port Centre on the second floor of the museum. The Port Cente<\/a>r showcases new technologies and games while explaining the reality of port life in today’s world. The development sees Bilbao joining the network of AIVP member port cities committed to using the Port Centre as a valuable tool for mediation between City, Port and Citizen. The Mayor of Bilbao, the President of the Port and the General Manager of AIVP officially confirmed Bilbao’s commitment in October 2019 by signing the AIVP Port Center Missions <\/a>Charter. The document was signed at the 6th “Port Citizen” workshop, which brings together the members of AIVP’s Port Centre network, and on this occasion, was organised jointly by the Port of Bilbao and AIVP.  AIVP is an active supporter of this social integration-oriented approach through the “Port Center Network<\/a>” initiative launched in 2011. The network now brings together the existing Port Centres in Antwerp, Genoa, Le Havre, Livorno, Rotterdam, Ashdod, Melbourne, Vancouver, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n
