The <\/span>Kvæsthus Pier<\/span><\/a><\/span>, designed by <\/span>Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects<\/span><\/a><\/span>, is a striking architectural landmark located in Copenhagen. The pier acts as a multifunctional space that accommodates various activities, from recreational areas and public squares to commercial zones. Above ground, the public space on the quay hosts seven small pavilions with a café area, small stages, ticket sales for boat trips, a car park entrance, a space for small-scale concerts, etc. Big screens can also be installed temporarily, along with equipment for a variety of urban or beach sports. The architects’ approach involves preserving the site’s historical elements while introducing contemporary features, resulting in a harmonious blend of past and present. The Kvæsthus pier showcases the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development and offers a vibrant, inclusive space for residents and visitors to enjoy the dynamic interaction between architecture and the surrounding environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Kvæsthus project<\/span><\/a><\/span> has materialised as a sprawling new city square designed to accommodate urban activities and foster a vibrant atmosphere for Copenhagen’s community. Situated at the Port of Copenhagen waterfront, adjacent to the Royal Danish Playhouse and nestled between Nyhavn’s canals and Amalienborg Palace, the project seamlessly complements the city’s existing urban fabric. The Kvæsthus project consists of three core components: <\/span><\/p>\n

1. Ofelia Plads: This expansive city square, inaugurated in 2017, serves as a hub for performing arts and cultural events, all while being closely connected to the water’s edge. Owned by the Danish Ministry of Culture and the Royal Danish Theatre, the square also includes the “Kissing Steps,” which frame a captivating new waterfront environment, <\/span><\/p>\n

2. The Kvæsthus Basin and Staircase: These features contribute to the creation of an engaging waterfront atmosphere, further enriching the project’s surroundings. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Underground Car Park: beneath Ofelia Plads, a three-story subterranean parking facility accommodates up to 500 cars. The car park’s design enhances urban accessibility, contributes to the revitalisation of Sankt Annæ Plads, and aligns with the city’s overall goal of reducing on-street car presence. The car park integrates seamlessly with the experience of enjoying performances at the Royal Theatre or participating in activities around the area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through a collaborative effort involving the Royal Danish Theatre, Realdania, and Jeudan, the Ofelia Plads Association has been established to organise and oversee events and initiatives on the square. This initiative demonstrates Copenhagen’s commitment to creating vibrant public spaces that foster cultural engagement and community interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n
