The Victoria Dockside project was built on the former site of Holt’s Wharf, a warehouse at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront area. During the early 20th century, the site was used as a goods and logistics hub that helped to make Hong Kong one of the busiest ports in the world. In 2017, <\/span>New World Development Company Limited<\/a><\/span> started redeveloping the area and had the master plan designed by the architecture firm <\/span>Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF)<\/a><\/span> and the landscape firm <\/span>Field Operations<\/a><\/span> in collaboration with <\/span>100 designers and artists<\/a><\/span> from around the globe. The project aimed to transform the site into an art and design district, building along the significant cultural installations already in place: the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, which opened on the waterfront in 1989, the Museum of Art (1991), and the Avenue of Stars, which has been one of the city’s most popular destinations since it opened in 2003. <\/span><\/p>\n

The redesigned promenade has green spaces, shaded areas, and numerous benches to attract the public and afford panoramic views of the city and the docks. However, the city needs to consider the upcoming extreme climate events. According to <\/span>data from the Hong Kong Observatory<\/a><\/span>, the city has already warmed by 1.8°C in post-industrial periods. Moreover, the sea level has risen almost 20 cm since 1990, and the amount and intensity of rainfalls have also increased. For these reasons, the seawall is covered with specially formed, prefabricated concrete and interlocking panels for improved structural resistance. Once, the cladding minimises wave break action and is a feature of the renovated waterfront promenade that intends to protect the shore from strong storms and rising tides. The effects of typhoons are also attenuated by the use of concrete pavers that are resistant to underwater conditions. A trellis structure will also act as a windbreaker.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over 5 million visitors have gone to see the project since it opened, including both locals and tourists from around the globe. The architectural diversity and suitable public spaces reactivate the waterfront, keeping its heritage alive.<\/span><\/p>\n
