In 2017, the Port Authority of Toronto, the Region Conservation Authority, and the city of Toronto came up with their new 2030, near-zero greenhouse gas emissions strategy and announced a multibillion-dollar redevelopment project that will take place within the boundaries of the Port of Toronto. The redevelopment project named ‘<\/span>Port Lands’<\/span><\/a><\/span> aims to turn 356 hectares of a former industrial and port site into a waterfront community centre, by redirecting the Don River and reorganising the cityscape into a domestic quarter where various activities can take place. The City of Toronto is actively engaged in planning and developing the <\/span>Port Lands area<\/span><\/a><\/span>, aiming to transform it into a vibrant, sustainable, and resilient waterfront community. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Port Lands project has been dedicated to <\/span>informing the public<\/span><\/a><\/span> about each major step during this long redevelopment project taking place. For this reason, public meetings are organised to ensure the transparency between the Port Authority of Toronto with the local communities living around the waterfront.<\/span><\/p>\n

A dedicated website has been created to act as an information gateway, with a report on the progress of the overall project, along with a library of useful documents relating to projects up for consultation, and minutes of meetings. A dedicated newsletter, “Update from Waterfront Toronto”, provides news on the various projects, consultation meetings or documents made available for consultation. The newsletter is a monthly publication, but the same channel is also used to publish articles and specific notices, for example, announcing meetings and inviting the public to attend. It is also often used to issue invitations to more festive events, such as the inauguration of a particular project. The portal website naturally allows visitors to explore the different sites concerned, but it also offers information about the various opportunities created by projects, especially in terms of jobs. This strategy has been taken up and expanded upon by a blog called “On the waterfront” and through social media.<\/span><\/p>\n
