Since the 2000s, the former dock district of this Hanseatic city has been attracting attention for its need for redevelopment. As a result, the western districts of the city of Bremen have been mobilised to develop a new ‘Uberseestadt’ neighborhood. In this context, public-private partnerships were established. Bremeninvest<\/span><\/a><\/span> commissioned Bremen’s Senator for Economy, Employment and Ports to improve infrastructure and market commercial and residential property. This operation aims to revitalise the area by helping businesses to set up there and by creating a new urban fabric to give life to this new district.<\/p>\n

The master plan for Überseestadt was completed in 2003, and the redevelopment of 300 hectares is planned for completion by 2025. The plan is one of Europe’s largest urban development schemes <\/a>and is considered outstanding for its port regeneration project. Its proximity to the city centre makes it more accessible to the public, and since the beginning, it has been thought of as a new, innovative quarter. One of the first steps was redeveloping a former warehouse known as “Speicher XI”. The historic building dates to 1912, and its 400 meters now hosts restaurants, the harbour museum, cultural institutes, and an Infocenter. In 2004, the Infocenter housed a “time machine”, which used a 360° camera to show visitors the past, present and future of the district. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now, it is possible to see a 14 m² urban planning model <\/a>that displays the projects already completed as well as future ones. A wall behind it shows a series of postcards with different projects that can be identified in the model. This way, the visitor can get a more defined idea of the project. The interactive approach has become popular among visitors once it makes the proportions and complexity of the Uberseestadt clear.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A number of urban developments have therefore been carried out, including the Sportgarten<\/span><\/a><\/span> (sport garden). The purpose of the Sportgarten Uberseestadt is to promote physical exercise in a setting conducive to intercultural encounters, all on a former artificial area left vacant.<\/p>\n

Another remarkable area is the ‘Waller Sand’. Formerly known as the ‘Weiche Kante’, it is one of the few places where the residents of Bremen’s western district can see the river Weser up close. Built over a 5-year period between 2017 and 2022, the Waller Sand beach and Molenturm will cover an area of around 3 hectares, with the emphasis on landscaping the dyke and resilience in the face of flood risk.<\/p>\n

These specific projects are an integral part of an overall development project to revitalise the entire western part of the city of Bremen for the benefit of residents, the economy and the environment.<\/p>\n
