In the <\/span>Port of Brussels<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the urban transformation of the canal area coexists with port activities, fostering close links between the city centre and inland navigation. In 1996, the Port of Brussels signed a “Development Charter”. A development charter typically refers to a document that outlines the objectives, scope, and guiding principles for a specific development project or initiative. It serves as a roadmap for stakeholders involved in the development process, providing clarity on goals and strategies to achieve them. The development charter helps ensure alignment and accountability among team members and stakeholders throughout the development process. Under the charter, the parties undertake to modernise their installations in keeping with the urban environment, paying special attention to the vicinity (signage, green areas, access, fencing, maintenance, etc.) and the architecture itself (recommendations on colours, materials, dimensions, etc.). This global approach ensures visual continuity and harmony between the various port infrastructures while making the port a more visitor-friendly environment and asserting its presence. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Port of Brussels, together with regional authorities and port businesses, signed a new “<\/span>Development Charter” in 2007 <\/span><\/a><\/span>aimed at fostering harmonious development of port activities in the urban environment of Brussels. This charter emphasises collaboration, integrating transport modes, ensuring environmental sustainability, and promoting job creation and training. By outlining objectives, strategies, and annual evaluations, the charter serves as a roadmap for the next five years, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development and promoting a modal shift towards waterway transport for improved mobility and environmental benefits. Additionally, the appointment of a transport expert underscores efforts to enhance logistical efficiency and promote waterway transport within the region. The most recent example is the “Construction Village”, on the left shore of the Vergote dock basin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The “Construction village” exemplifies sustainable urban logistics by serving as a hub for distributing construction materials and collecting waste. The project was created by <\/span>Tetra Architecten<\/span><\/a><\/span>. This reduces road freight and encourages inland shipping, aligning with an urban ecosystem perspective. Architecturally, the project creates open spaces between streets to connect perspectives across the canal, and a modular, grid-based warehouse system provides flexibility for various uses. Sustainability measures include solar panels, rainwater collection, and recyclable polycarbonate façade panels. The warehouses were constructed as insulated boxes to manage temperature variations. The project effectively integrates port functionality with urban revitalisation, reflecting a holistic approach to sustainable development. The project was completed with the addition of an urban transhipment centre to be used mainly for construction goods, which was finished in the autumn of 2018. These tandem construction projects ultimately reduce heavy vehicle traffic by carrying construction materials directly to the heart of the Belgian capital. In recognition of its design, combining recycling, logistics hub and urban integration, it was awarded the Holcim Foundation’s 2014 International Sustainable Development prize. The “Construction Village” stands as a significant achievement for the Port of Brussels, entailing the creation of warehouse facilities along the Vergote Dock’s left bank adjacent to Avenue du Port. This development serves as a pivotal shift, allowing the relocation of wholesale businesses formerly situated at Béco Dock, facilitating the Brussels-Capital Region’s amenagement of a regional park and the Picard footbridge near Place Sainctelette. <\/span><\/p>\n
