The Port of Antwerp has made cooperation with stakeholders the cornerstone of its sustainability commitment. This collective approach resulted in the publication of a first sustainability report in 2010. It supposes close involvement by the various partners concerned and encourages exchanges of expertise and feedback. It also promotes acceptance and adoption of sustainable practices and solutions, in particular for stakeholders such as small businesses, for whom this may be more challenging. The approach is also progressive: the partners’ critical analysis and recommendations on the first report were taken into account in the following reports. To complement this approach, a communication strategy has been adopted with a <\/span>dedicated website.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

This cooperation agreement and its focus on sustainability in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has accounted for its emissions reductions and ways to solve its pollution problems. A significant contributor to Belgium’s GDP, it is <\/span>pioneering groundbreaking carbon reduction strategies<\/span><\/a><\/span>, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Responsible for 10% of the nation’s CO\u2082 emissions, this port is boldly focusing on sustainability to transform itself into a global exemplar of environmentally responsible trade hubs. Wind turbines now power its terminals, while advanced battery storage manages intermittent renewable energy. Exploration into hydrogen and the Antwerp Euroterminal’s adoption of LED lights, solar panels, and rainwater utilization have propelled it to 86% green energy sourcing. The port collaborates on the <\/span>PIONEERS project<\/span><\/a><\/span>, aligned with the European Green Deal’s objectives, to explore innovative environmental impact reduction strategies. By weaving digital technologies and sustainable transport methods, the port seeks to foster a more liveable urban environment. The port’s leadership shines through by aligning its mission with the <\/span>17 Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a crucial step in catalysing broader industry-wide sustainable practices. As COVID-19 propels change, the port hastens its journey toward a <\/span>carbon-neutral future by 2050<\/span><\/a><\/span>, boasting initiatives like carbon capture, green hydrogen, renewable energy projects, and an eco-friendly Waterbus for commuting. Collaborating internationally with other eco-conscious ports, it strives to curb CO2 emissions and enhance air quality. With its resolute integration of SDGs into decisions, procurement, and daily operations, the Port of Antwerp sets a powerful precedent, showcasing how ports can lead in shaping a more sustainable future while inspiring other industries to follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\n
