Following devastating floods in 2011, which caused significant infrastructure damage, the Queensland Government initiated a design competition for the replacement of Brisbane’s ferry terminals. <\/span>Aurecon<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>Cox Rayner Architects<\/span><\/a><\/span>, along with <\/span>Lat27<\/span><\/a><\/span> for landscape architecture, won the competition, resulting in eight new terminals being built between 2011 and 2016. The project was the winner in the “Infrastructure” category at the <\/span>2013 World Architecture Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span>. The architectural quality of the terminal’s design and its visual integration into the surroundings help promote public transport on the river. These terminals not only replaced infrastructure but also aimed to enhance flood resilience, accessibility, compliance with disability standards, network efficiency, and connection with the river. <\/span>Milton CityCat Terminal<\/span><\/a><\/span> was inaugurated in January 2015 and opened to the public in early 2016. <\/span><\/p>\n

Flood resilience was a priority therefore, innovative design elements were introduced. The gangways can detach and swing during floods, and the pontoon design accommodates tidal changes and floodwaters. Integrating terminals with landscapes proved challenging, especially in urban settings. The solution involved ramps, lifts, and visual markers for accessibility and navigation. Continuity across various sites was achieved by maintaining architectural geometry and using a suitable planting palette and hard materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project won acclaim for creatively addressing complex challenges and respecting existing contexts. The terminals’ design doesn’t demand attention but blends harmoniously with the surroundings. Awards, including the AILA Queensland Civic Landscape category, acknowledge the project’s collaborative and thoughtful approach, describing it as showcasing landscape architects’ fine-grained thinking and intervention in existing landscapes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Irrespective of the debate surrounding the extent of rising water levels due to climate change, this growing risk can be taken into account at a very early stage of development projects, specifically in their urban planning and architectural aspects. However, rather than merely adapting existing facilities to cope with greater environmental challenges, this resilience strategy also offers the opportunity to create brand-new spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n
