The “Paseo del Bajo<\/a>” is a significant new highway constructed between the port and the city centre to better connect the incoming and outgoing resources from the port to the city. The highway was decided to be built in 2016 after an announcement<\/a> by the chief of government of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, and the minister of Urban Development and Transportation, Franco Moccia. <\/span><\/p>\n

An essential characteristic of this new redevelopment project of communications between the city and the port is that this new highway connects existing highways<\/a>, and it is allowed to be used primarily by trucks to ease the transportation of goods, as seen in the figure. This new, big highway connects the motorways to the north and south of the capital via a 7.1 km corridor separating medium and long-distance HGVs and coaches (4 dedicated lanes) from smaller vehicles (2 x 4 lanes). The route runs the length of the redeveloped former port district of Puerto Madero. A section of the road is underground, allowing a smoother connection between Puerto Madero and the city, with a series of footbridges, cycle lanes and 136,000 m2 of new green spaces. The project is intended to ensure safer, more fluid traffic, shorter journey times and less visual and noise pollution for the zone, where congestion has been estimated at more than 25,000 vehicles per day, including 10,000 trucks. It will benefit not just the city but also the port, which will be more easily accessible. Work began in 2017, and the new development was inaugurated on May 27, 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n
