The ports of Bremen\/Bremerhaven are among the world’s largest container ports. However, Bremerhaven is also a fishing port, occupying 450 hectares of land and 150 hectares of water. It remains Europe’s leading centre for seafood processing and production<\/a>. The crises which affected the fishing industry in the 1970s and ‘80s led to a drastic reduction in the fishing fleet. With support from the EU, the state of Bremen embarked on a global programme to modernise and restructure the fishing port.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cluster was established around the local fishing industry. The project has led to the renovation of certain buildings for the development of fishing and maritime-themed cultural and tourist activities, along with a start-up centre for biotechnologies and research institutes such as the “ Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research”. The old fish packing hall now provides premises for 15 trade and catering businesses. The dispatch hall of the former railway station for fish transport has become the Forum Fischereihafen, a multimedia centre providing information about fish and the sea. The facilities are complemented by multifunctional lecture rooms and halls, providing the venue for the “Theater im Fischereihafen” (Theatre in the Fishing Port).<\/span><\/p>\n

The port also houses the Schaufenster Fischereihafen<\/a>, a business and tourism centre running a range of fishing-related activities. Opened in the 1990s by the state of Bremen and the FBG, the “Shop window” aims to give locals and tourists inside information about the fish industry. The idea allows the port’s history to remain alive and strengthens the connection between the port and the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the south of  Bremerhaven, a <\/a>centre dedicated to renewable energies<\/a> –  in particular offshore wind – has been built. The development of offshore wind power is a critical strategic priority for the port. A 25-hectare offshore terminal is also planned for handling, pre-assembling, and storing wind turbines. The facilities are completed by a wind energy research centre and “RelyOn Nutec<\/a>”, a training centre focusing on offshore wind-related safety issues. Founded in 2002 in the spirit of networking, the Wind Energy Agency WAB <\/a>has more than 350 members (companies and institutions). It covers all the areas of the wind industry, from research and production to installation and maintenance. Together, these infrastructures constitute the new economic cluster that has formed around this single industry.<\/span><\/p>\n
