Completed in 2008, the construction and operation of the container terminal CT 4 in the port of Bremerhaven required compensation measures and work on buildings in the nearby urban area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bremenports, the company which runs the port, contacted around 85 homeowners and residents in the centre of Weddewarden and certain districts of Imsum, to offer to equip their homes with high-quality soundproofed windows and insulated doors. Each home situated near the terminal has also been equipped with a new ventilation system to guarantee clean air in houses with new class III windows.<\/span><\/p>\n

These noise protection measures are also aimed at residents of Weddewarden and Imsum living further from the terminal. Specialists review cases individually, based on forecast exposure to noise pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n

To this end, noise pollution was mapped in two stages on the basis of the European directive on noise and the environment. The first phase, in 2007, was aimed at drawing up homogeneous noise maps identifying the main traffic routes with an average daily traffic volume of more than 16,438 vehicles<\/span><\/a><\/span> and main roads with almost 6 million vehicles per year. A second phase of mapping in 2012 broadened the scope, with Bremen to be considered as an agglomeration. Here, noise mapping serves as a basis for planning noise abatement measures. From then on, noise pollution from road traffic, rail transport, industry and commerce was recorded. A total of 16 maps<\/span><\/a><\/span> now provide information on the noise situation in Bremerhaven.<\/p>\n

Ecological sites dedicated to the preservation of flora and fauna have also been created as part of the compensatory measures.<\/p>\n

The Port of Bremen is aware that its CT4 port extension project has had a serious impact on sensitive natural areas by destabilising the natural ecosystem. The Luneplate site in Bremerhaven was therefore implemented to serve as a refuge for nesting birds and their resting places. Animal and plant species, some of which are endangered, have also been able to find refuge and habitat there.<\/span><\/p>\n
