Located on the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor, between Lake Nokoué and the Atlantic Ocean, Cotonou is the economic capital of Benin. The municipality of Cotonou, established as a department during the last administrative division, is the smallest of the twelve (12) departments that make up Benin. Its surface area is estimated at 79 km2. The city is made up of 165 neighborhoods spread across 13 districts. These districts are located on either side of the channel (4 districts to the east and 9 to the west of the channel).
