The port of San Antonio is the main port of Chile and the only one capable of simultaneously docking three Newpanamax vessels. Working together with its three concessionaires: San Antonio Terminal Internacional, DP World, and Puerto Panul. In 2018 the total throughput reached over than 22 million tons. Even though San Antonio is a multipurpose port, the main activity is the transfer of container cargo (over 1.6 million TEU / year). A ranking of CEPAL classified San Antonio as one of the ten most important container ports in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in january 2018 it was announced the decision to go ahead with the new Outer Port Expansion Project will require the construction of 2 mile breakwater, the recovery of more than 180 hectares and the construction of two 1.1-mile-long moorings that will house two new terminals with a combined capacity of 6 million TEU / year.
