:The sustainable management of the port of Lisbon requires strategic planning due to its diversity, contemplating the development of the port activity and the preservation of the cultural heritage, integrated in a port metropolis. Within its area of jurisdiction, which covers the riverfronts of 11 municipalities, the Port Authority is responsible for the management of the port and also the administration of the Maritime Public Domain. The physical and jurisdictional characteristics of the port area have played a decisive role in the way in which the riverfront rehabilitation has been carried out. The improvements that have taken place were based on a strategic vision that took into account the multifunctionality of the port zone, the importance of port operations, the flexibility of the solutions adopted, the compromise and co-operation between different entities, keeping the area within the public domain and enlarging the public areas and overall quality. Projects for urban rehabilitation bringing great prestige to the riverside and to the city were developed in a much reflected manner in order not to hamper the main objective of the port. In addition, the Port Authority has been qualifying operational areas and integrating the latter in the surrounding urban network through the co-operation of distinguished architects.
